»VIDEOS FOR NOBODY«
The works of the norwegian video artist Tor Jørgen van Eijk position themselves not only in present times, but create visible and believable an intersection in between past and future of video art. But where stands Video Art more than 40 years after its birth, what can it be after MTV, after »Big Brother« plus all the other reality tv shows and last but not least YouTube? Tor Jørgen van Eijk's answer is simple as it is independent. Instead of digital perfection he is focussing on the originally analogue roots of this media.
»Surviving« (2007) and »Vertical Meat« (2009) have been realized at NOTAM Studios in Oslo (Norwegian Center for Technology in Music and Arts), the works of the »RAW«-series in March 2008 in the Experimental Television Center in Owego, NY (USA) on original equipment built by David Jones, Dan Sandin, Nam June Paik and others.
Despite the excessive use of well-known special effects origin from the childhood days of video and the principle of repetition, the artist succeeds to create a new contemporary expression by combining established ingredients. Thereby Tor Jørgen van Eijk is detaching himself from the original content of the recordings and hence from reality. In the outcome his videos are reminiscent of paintings. The assumed »too much« is resulting in a minimalistic expression and holds the contemplator in a meditative state of fascination.
