To describe Roland Wirtz’ works as simply photography by todays standards is too narrow of a conclusion. In the age of digital imaging, he is creating a physical evidence of events and sites. With this approach he develops a semiotic borderland between film, photography, sculpture and memorial.
By means of a huge, self designed camera, events and sites are exposed directly on to 2,20 x 1,27 m (86 2/3" x 50") sized photographic paper. No negative, no digital retouching, no second try, no copies.
In his new works Roland Wirtz approaches sites in transition between real existence and myth through his photographic principle of immediateness. That way Wirtz has literally retained in one of his works presented at spl.05 > »immediatus« the last working hours of the last official working day of the Airport Tempelhof, exactly one year ago at the 30th of October 2008.
The immediateness of the image creation turnes this „last photo“ of the active airport into something more than a picture – it becomes a physical reproduction of the historic event. Because the reflected and emitted photons of the position and signal lights of planes, runway and airport illumination engraved their image directly in to the paper, present at the scene of the event. The moment creates its own monument – unique and unaltered. In case of the Airport Tempelhof, the scene appears dark atmospheric, nearly abstract.
The second image of the exhibition is also dedicated to a dying site. It shows one of the last days of the demolition of the »Palast der Republik«. But the »Palast« presents itself totally different. The motif appears to be romantic and is reminiscent of Caspar David Friedrich.
The immediatus works have one more thing in common with the recorded scene: The magic of the image can just be experienced first hand. Every kind of communication or reproductions seem to be worthless.
Who is not using the seldom chance to see these originals, can just guess what he is missing. That’s why: Be there or be square!
Since 2005 brot.undspiele galerie berlin presents artists who‘s works bring unconventional impulses to art. Hereby we concentrate on contemporary art of the last 30 years. Mostly we are interested in the tension between the works of different generations of artists.
