To describe Roland Wirtz’ works as simply photography by todays standards is too narrow of a conclusion. In the age of digital imaging, he is creating a physical evidence of events. Specifically, »Ereignis 21« (»Event 21«), which is the Champions League Finals 2008 in Moscow. By means of a huge, self designed camera, the event is exposed immediatly and over its whole duration of time directly on to 86 2/3" x 50" sized photographic paper. No negative, no digital retouching, no second try, no copies. The exposure is in the same way unique and uncertain in its outcome as the event itself. The photographs appear magical with their fascinating colours and their unimagined sharpness, whereby even smallest details in some hundred yards distance are distinguishable. But it’s not just the event which is represented by the work, it’s also the complex process of its creation. This aspect is made visible through a film documentation shown in the exhibition.
