»WITHOUT YOU BABY, THERE AIN’T NO US«
In Ihrer Serie WITHOUT YOU BABY, THERE AIN’T NO US beschäftigen sich
die Schweizer Künstler Comenius Roethlisberger und Admir Jahic – besser bekannt als INVISIBLE HEROES – mit dem noch sehr jungen, aber doch globalen sozialen Phänomen des Web 2.0. Für ihre Arbeit übertragen sie Teile der unendlichen Bilderwelten des Internetportals YouTube als Zeichnungen auf handgeschöpftes Papier. Für manche Arbeiten werden – wie im Falle des Star-Wars-Kids – sogar alle Einzelbilder des Videos gezeichnet.
Ihre subjektive Auswahl der Vorlagen scheint den selben Prinzipien zu folgen, wie die Mehrzahl der Youtube-Nutzer. Man könnte somit fast von einer dokumentarischen Arbeit sprechen, welche ein witziges bis peinliches Bild unserer eigenen Vorlieben zeichnet. So dürfte es den meisten Betrachtern leicht fallen, Bekanntes oder Beliebtes zu entdecken.
Ebenso erfreulich ist, dass sie auch dem demokratischen Ansatz des Internet treu geblieben sind und trotz ihres Erfolgs (u.a. kaufte die Al Sabah Art Collection eine eigene Serie mit arabischen Filmikonen) ihre Arbeiten immer noch zu Preisen verkaufen, die für jedermann erschwinglich sind.

Der Name Brot und Spiele stammt von der alten römischen Redensart PANEM ET CIRCENSES. Sie brachte die Idee zum Ausdruck, das Volk mit kostenloser Nahrung und Unterhaltung zu regieren. Die brot.undspiele galerie berlin präsentiert Künstler, deren Arbeiten unkonventionelle Impulse in die Kunst hineintragen. Schwerpunkt sind dabei zeitgenössische Werke der letzten 40 Jahre.
